Located on the southeastern coast of the Balkan Peninsula, Bulgaria is simply a country that belongs to the alleged east flank of NATO. This is despite it bordering almost exclusively allied states. To the south they are Turkey and Greece, to the west North Macedonia, and to the north Romania. Bulgaria's only neighbour not part of the North Atlantic Alliance is Russia-sympathizing Serbia. However, the classification of Bulgaria as an east flank is determined by its location on the Black Sea, and hence the possible threat of landing or violation of airspace from the east.
