President Karol Nawrocki sent the Constitutional Court a taxation bill on the extraordinary profits of fuel companies. Prime Minister Donald Tusk responded with a malicious abbreviation of CKN, and in the background of the dispute is about PLN 4 billion, which the government wanted to spend on cheaper fuel.

Presidential motion to the Court

Karol Nawrocki did not sign the law on taxation on extraordinary profits from the sale of liquid fuels and directed it under preventive control to the Constitutional Court. The head of state questioned the compatibility of the rules with the rule that the law should not act retroactively. Danina was to cover the profits of the companies from March to December 2026, and thus partially already past. Pending the Court's ruling, the law shall not enter into force.

Tusk: was CPN, is CKN

Prime Minister Donald Tusk reacted harshly. On Saturday, he referred to the extinguished government simplification program of CPN (Prices Paliw Lower) and coined the malicious abbreviation CKN, which he developed as "Prices of Karol Nawrocki". A day earlier, the head of government wrote about the President's "shocking decision", accusing him of blocking a bill allowing him to taxation the profits of fuel companies and fund cheaper fuel on stations. In the government's narrative, the head of state is liable for the fact that drivers will not see lower prices.

What's the dispute about?

The heart of the conflict is simply a taxation on the extraordinary profits of fuel companies. According to Finance Minister Andrzej Domański, the tribute was to bring the budget about PLN 4 billion, intended for a shield package to defend Poles from advanced prices at stations. The government presents it as a way for extraordinary profits from an costly fuel period to return to drivers. Addressing the bill to the Court means that this money is now outside the scope of the budget.

President's Office: reduce VAT and excise duty

The president's environment rejects the version of blocking cheaper fuel. The head of the President's Chancellery Paweł Kiebernaker argued that Nawrocki's decision was to defend Poles from solutions threatening with record-priced fuel. alternatively of imposing a fresh taxation on companies that could be passed on to customers, he called on the government to reduce VAT and excise duties. This is simply a dispute over the method: an additional tribute versus a cut of the fiscal burden that the state already charges on all litre.

What next with prices

Tusk announced that if the marketplace becomes unstable again, the government will propose to return the maximum prices at the stations, for example for the last 2 weeks of holidays erstwhile Poles return from their holidays. The Prime Minister associated the hazard of increases with geopolitical situations and tensions around the U.S. and Iran, which had previously raised Brent's oil price above $100 per barrel, after which the price went back to the area of $89.

Rate for drivers

For a average driver, 1 value counts: the price on the distributor. Diesel rubs about PLN 8 per litre, and each gold more is simply a real cost for home budgets, transport companies and prices in stores. The political dispute over who is liable for the fuel will be settled in the Constitutional Court, but the fuel bill pays the driver no substance whose communicative is more accurate.
