With large joy we print Deska, which was announced during the fresh ritual works of the lodge Michał Tokarzewski-Karaszewicz.
“Vivat May! 3rd May! – Masoni and their imagination of the Republic”
Sisters and Brothers,
I would like us to consider present not only the importance of 1 of the most crucial events in the past of our Homeland – the adoption of the Constitution 3 May – but besides to look at them through the prism of free-mural ideals. On the day erstwhile Poland decided to effort to be reborn as a community of free people, it besides breathed hope into the hearts of those who, like us, believed that building a better planet began with working on themselves, searching for the Truth, and faithful to principles.
On May 3, 1791, the Four-Year Sejm passed a government bill which was not only an effort to save the fallen Republic, but above all a manifesto of enlightened patriotism. The Constitution was the fruit of the work of people who wanted to transform a country plunged into a state that could argue the invaders. Among them there was no shortage of Freemulators. Their action was not limited to theory, but was an example of courage and civic responsibility. At the Lodge, we take up spiritual work, and they take up the same work in public.
The notion of the Republic is not limited to the category of political strategy or form of government.
In a deeper sense – the Republic is simply a community of free and equal people who consciously undertake to build the common good. Just as in the Lodge – where each of us, regardless of our origins, beliefs or beliefs, undertakes to work on his own Stone – so besides in the Republic it is about perfecting ourselves and the community we are part of.
The Constitution of 3 May, being a political act, was at the same time a manifestation of deep moral concern for the form of social life. The legislators, among whom there was no shortage of masons, understood that without ethical foundations, without civic virtues and common responsibility, even the best law would be powerless. This is why reforms were adopted to strengthen the structure of the state, but besides – more importantly – to awaken the conscience of the nation. The abolition of the veto liberalum, the care of the people, the abolition of any privileges – they were acts of courage, but besides work on the common character of society.
For us the symbolic message of this communicative is clear: just as the Republic must be built on lasting values, so our individual temple must be based on virtues, not on illusions.
Let us ask ourselves: can the modern Republic – as a community of citizens – inactive be seen as a moral workshop in which all citizen feels liable for the form of the common good?
Freedom has for centuries remained in the service of the spiritual improvement of man, but also—and no less—the improvement of societies. The Age of Enlightenment, in which the ideas of constitutionalism, human rights and civilian liberties were born, was at the same time a golden age of freemulation. For a reason – both ideas grew out of the same ground: belief in reason, dignity of the individual and strength of the community.
In the United States, Masoni – like George Washington and Benjamin Franklin – played a key function in creating the foundations of democracy. In France – Lafayette and his fellow brothers worked for systemic change. In South America – Bolívar and San Martín.
After the Constitution was passed on 3 May and the fall of the Republic, these ideas were not lost. They survived in the emigration free-mulcer circles, in the activity of brothers in national uprisings, in organic work, in the Second Republic, and besides – in the conspiracy of times of war. Each of these stages is simply a cornerstone for modern Polish democracy.
It is worth noting that the Masonry was never aimed at political power – the goal of the Lodge was always to form an individual ready for liable action.
The freebuilder does not ask, ‘What do I owe?’, but ‘What can I give?’. In this spirit democracy is not a voting system, but an area of active participation.
In today's planet – full of populism, simplification, aggression and civic passiveness – we request to remember again that democracy is like a Temple – requires care, harmony and the foundation of values.
Does our lodge work translate into our activity in the profane planet – not as agitation, but as an example of a righteous, enlightened and liable man?
General Michał Tokarzewski-Karaszewicz – patron of our Workshop – was a Mason, patriot and man of honor. By creating the Polish triumph Service in 1939, he showed that the thought of the Republic did not die with the failure of the state. In his actions we see the continuation of the attitude of the Masons from the times of the Constitution 3 May – work for the general good, readiness to sacrifice, but besides spiritual balance. His life is for us a model of harmony between spirituality, service ethos, and brotherhood.
May is an chance to ask himself: what is my Republic? Am I just an observer or a co-writer?
In a planet of chaos and relativism, mason – even if he does not act politically – cannot be indifferent. Our words, gestures and decisions make a space in which the spirit of the community can flourish. Working on yourself, conscientiousness, fact – these are constitutional values in a free-mural way.
For us Freemastors, May can besides be a symbol of spiritual awakening. Just as in the Lodge, we place emphasis on Light, which distracts the darkness of ignorance, so in our work of profane we should be bearers of Light – witnesses of virtue, reason and dialogue.
The Constitution 3 May is not only an historical event – it is an thought that is waiting for re-fulfillment.
Today, erstwhile we observe erosion of values, social tensions, common distrust and a fall in political culture, we should ask: did not the next 3 May come? specified an inner, personal, decision-based, that we will not be indifferent.
The free builder is not a revolutionary with a sword – he is simply a reformer with a chisel. Just as in the box we work on symbolic tools, so in life we should work on the planet of tools of reason, work and ethics.
Sisters and Brothers, May it be a reminder to all of us that each Lodge is simply a tiny Republic. That all decision we make is simply a vote on the future of the community. That all word spoken with love and wisdom is simply a Constitution written into people's hearts.
In this spirit we can say that May is not a date. He's a commitment. A summons. It is simply a question asked to each of us:
Are you ready, Sister and Brother, for the Republic – the true, shared, noble – to revive first in you?
So let the slogan “Vivat Maj, 3rd May!” be not only a song, but besides a silent interior commitment. Let the Lodge be the forge of our individual Constitution—the moral law that shapes the Republic of our hearts.
