According to human rights defenders, 24 death sentences were issued in Belarus from 2015 to 2020. This data comes from an analysis of the run “Human Rights Defenders Against the Death punishment in Belarus”, prepared on the occasion of the global Day Against the Death Penalty, celebrated on October 10.
According to published data, 5 death sentences have been issued in the last 5 years: on Stanisław Koscieua, Ilia Koscieua, Wiktara Skrundika, Alaksandra Taratuta and German citizen Rico Krieger.
At the same time, 3 acts of pardon were issued in relation to the Koscie brothers, accused of killing a teacher surviving in the neighbourhood and setting her home on fire in 2020 in Czerików, as well as in relation to Rico Krieger, released from Belarusian prison as part of an global prisoner exchange program.
Human rights defenders know about 2 executions between 2020 and 2020. This is about Wiktar Skrundik, who was tried for a series of deaths of pensioners under Słuck in 2019, and Wiktar Paulau, convicted of killing 2 older women in the Vitebsk area in December 2018.
“On the fact that [Wictara Paulaua] was sentenced to death, as always, relatives learned after any time. Andrej Południa, coordinator of the Human Rights Defenders Against the Death punishment in Belarus, noted.
According to him, the destiny of Słuck Alaksandra Taratuta, who together with his wife was convicted of killing their three-year-old child, is presently unknown.
