Swiatlana Cichanouska welcomes the United States' efforts to release Belarusian political prisoners, including in exchange for softening sanctions against Lukashenko. In her opinion, the European Union should stick to a consistent sanctioning policy. She said this during the discussion “Will Russia be able to keep the economy during the war?” as part of the planet economical Forum in Davos.
“The case of Belarus clearly shows that sanctions work due to the fact that Lukashenko frees people not due to the fact that he has abruptly become humanitarian. I wouldn't fishy Lukashenko of humanity at all. He does this due to the fact that sanctions work, isolation is effective and is willing to release even his top enemies, just to get free of these sanctions. In our case, we have developed a formula: US sanctions – for the release of people, European sanctions – for the release of the country," said the politician.
According to her, European sanctions are far more serious than US sanctions. As an example, she gave a ban on the transit of potassium fertilisers. She said that even if US sanctions were relaxed against the potassium manufacture without transit through Lithuania, the gross would not be large.
“Without transit through Europe, especially through Lithuania, Lukashenko will not benefit much. Therefore, European sanctions should service irreparable, more crucial changes in Belarus. And of course, in the case of our country, I am very grateful to John Cole, the peculiar Envoy for Belarus, for his truly intensive work to free people. However, we ask Europe not to follow president Trump's sanctions policy," added the leader of the Belarusian democratic forces.
Cichanouska stressed that erstwhile it comes to sanctions against Russia, the countries supporting Moscow must not be forgotten.
“The Lukashenko economy, of course, is working for Russia. About 200 Belarusian companies produce military equipment for the Russian war. Most Russian rocket complexes usage Belarusian chassis. Belarusian banks are utilized to conclude military contracts. It is so very crucial to agree on sanctions against the Belarusian government and Russia in order to avoid utilizing gaps. Of course, this is not the right time to abolish sanctions against the Belarusian regime, as this would definitely strengthen Russia," Cichanouska said.
