The most crucial oil and gas company in Romania, OMV Petrom, announces that it has sold 5% of its 50 percent share in the Han Asparuh marine exploration task in the Black Sea to Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH), owned by the Bulgarian State.
A week ago, the Bulgarian government announced that BEH would buy 5% of its shares from both OMV Offshore Bulgaria, a company owned by OMV Petrom, and NewMed Energy Balkan Limited, part of the Israeli company NewMed Energy, which has the right to search. ‘The Bulgarian State, through Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH), joined the Han Asparuh Search Consortium in the Bulgarian Black Sea area, with a share of 10%. BEH will cover a proportional share (10%) of the costs incurred in preparing and drilling operations”, reports OMV Petrom. In the fresh OMV Petrom partnership structure remains a 45% operator, NewMed Energy has 45% and BEH 10%.
"To this end, Bulgaria will actively participate in the search for its marine resources and in strengthening the country's energy security. In addition, specified projects can have a crucial impact on the economy," said Valentin Nikolov, CEO of Bulgarian Energy Holding.
OMV Petrom, along with NewMed Energy, began in late 2025 searching for Han Asparuh's sea bed, located in Bulgaria's exclusive economical zone, in the Black Sea.
The first gas reserves in the deposit are estimated at about 250 billion cubic metres.
