Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki took part in the conference "Polish-Ukrainian Partnership in building energy safety in the future". During the event he stressed the request to invest in energy and critical infrastructure. He presented fresh plans to grow the gas and energy grid. 1 of the current challenges is the search for fresh gas sources in various areas, including Ukraine. To date, the Polish government has taken a number of measures that have allowed itself to become independent of Russian natural materials, including investments in floating gasports, expansion of oilports in Gdańsk or planned construction of atomic power plants. The implementation of the plans and the completion of the investments undertaken will strengthen safety in Poland and Central Europe.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki stressed that after Ukraine won the war, fresh perspectives would be opened before our region. Poland seeks to make its energy security, but besides Ukraine and Europe. There are presently discussions on cooperation in gas exploration in various areas, including Ukraine. This involves upgrading the network. The connection between Chmielnicki and Rzeszów is already being modernised. The subject of the talks is besides the connection between Equal and Chełm, where the atomic power plant is located.

"It is worth a variety of ways to rebuild our energy architecture utilizing renewable sources of the future, which, together with the atom, will surely be the backbone of our energy in the 1930s, in the 1940s and in the following decades," the head of government noted.

Russian energy monopoly

Russia has been a violent politician for years. In 2006, Putin utilized gas blackmail against Poland. He then assaulted Georgia in 2008. In 2009, Moscow introduced peculiar regulations and thus declared a gas war on Ukraine. In 2014, the Russians occupied Crimea and part of Donbas. On February 24, 2022, the Russians began violent aggression against Ukraine, which continues to this day, and with its effects the full planet is measured.

"After Moscow's gas blackmails against Poland and Ukraine, after the attack on Georgia, after the annexation of Crimea, we knew that the hydrocarbon monopoly in Europe was as crucial to Putin as tanks and ammunition. In this way, the Kremlin has been covering the gas network, the pipeline network, its natural resources all over Europe – it has become increasingly dependent on itself" - said the Prime Minister.

Energy independence

The Polish government knew that the only right solution was to decision distant from Russian energy resources. We have taken a number of actions that have led to Poland being self-sufficient.

Previous initiatives of the Polish government:

  • construction of Baltic Pipe;
  • extension of the gas port in Świnoujście;
  • investment in a floating FSRU unit in the Gulf of Gdańsk, i.e. a floating gasport with all the pipelines needed to distribute this gas across Poland;
  • construction of gas interconnectors in Lithuania, Slovakia, in the close future in the Czech Republic;
  • construction of a atomic power plant;
  • the construction of tiny atomic reactors;
  • signing gas supply contracts from different directions of the planet (including the United States);
  • conclusion of oil supply contracts to Polish refineries.

"What are the effects of government energy policy? During the 2 term, we have led Poland to complete independency from Russia. The figures talk for themselves: zero Russian oil and zero Russian gas – present this is the energy balance in trade with Russia," stressed the head of the government.

Support for Ukraine

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki thanked the Polish institutions for helping Ukraine repair its energy network. Ukraine has synchronized its energy strategy with the EU system. Without this, maintaining our neighbour's strategy would be highly difficult, and the state cannot function without electricity.

"During my last visit to Kiev a fewer weeks ago, president Zelenski presented to me the large efforts of Ukrainian engineers. He besides thanked for our contribution to the fast reconstruction and repair of Ukrainian infrastructure and critical infrastructure elements. All this enabled Ukraine to function more usually – after all, far from normal, but somewhat more average functioning – the head of government said.

Poland has supported Ukraine for armed or humanitarian reasons since the beginning of the war. Our country's delegation went to Kiev in the first period of Russian aggression. The gathering with president Volodymyr Zelenski and Prime Minister Denys Szmyhal was attended by Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Deputy Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński together with Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala and Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša.
