Even before the election, the Civic Coalition assured that erstwhile it came to power, it would take care of the issue of reparation. Donald Tusk criticized the way the PiS demanded immense money from Germany. He noted that he knew how to make Germany account for crimes committed during planet War II. During a joint conference with Chancellor Olaf Scholz after their talks in Berlin, the current Prime Minister was asked about this issue.
6 trillion PLN compensation
"My predecessors formally asked the German government not to reparations. This document, which was sent by the erstwhile Polish government to the German government, spoke of any form of compensation. An institute was besides established that calculates the losses Poland suffered due to the German attack on Poland in 1939," he replied.
Indeed, the Institute of War failure estimated Poland's losses at over PLN 6 trillion. The Government of the United Right made a note to the Berlin authorities to address the reparation issue. Each time the German Government reiterated that the issue was regulated and completed on a legal basis.
"The suffering we Germans have caused our Polish neighbours is immeasurable. This war was a German crime," said German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
The future and common defence as compensation?
Donald Tusk expressed his desire to focus on the future, mentioning 1 of the talks with Scholz in Berlin. He pointed out that formally the issue of reparation had been closed many years ago, but moral and financial reparation had never been accomplished, without blaming the Chancellor or himself.
"I would very much like this historical reflection and decisions that could satisfy us so that they will service the future, common security. I fishy the Chancellor might have a different opinion. I believe that Germany has something to do here," the Prime Minister stressed.
The Prime Minister did not want to sound aggressive in his statements. “But not only due to the fact that I am a Polish politician, I am besides a historian and I am a Gdańszczan. And all these 3 reasons make me think seriously about the fact that settling certain accounts would surely be a historical justice. But I do not want to make it a front of common resentment, I just want to make it an thought for further cooperation for security, beneficial to both nations," he added.
After the meeting, Olaf Scholz thanked Donald Tusk through the X portal in Polish. “Thank you for your visit, Donald Tusk! We share the desire for fair peace, freedom, stableness and safety in Europe as partners in the EU and allies in NATO. Poland's safety is besides our safety – we act in common defence," he wrote.
