On 22 August 2025, the United Nations officially declared that there was a famine in the Gaza Strip. According to a study published by the Integrated Classification of Food Safety Phases (IPC), an global food safety monitoring initiative in the world, hunger first affected the northern regions of Gaza, covering about 20% of the territory, including the city of Gaza.
This is the first officially confirmed case of famine in the mediate East in history.
The IPC study confirms that more than half a million Palestinians, or about 514,000 people, face disastrous conditions for hunger, characterized by utmost food shortages, demolition and death. This number may increase to 641,000 people, or almost 1 3rd of the Gaza Strip population, by the end of September 2025, erstwhile the disaster is likely to extend to the governorship of Deir el-Balah and Khan Yunis.
UN experts point out that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has been artificially triggered and is the direct consequence of ongoing conflict, mass displacement and the near-total breakdown of basic services and infrastructure. UN advanced Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Tuerk identified hunger in the Gaza Strip as “direct effect of the Israeli government” and warned that this could be considered a war crime.
The UN humanitarian aid chief, Tom Fletcher, declared that the famine was “totally avoidable” and arose “because Israel systematically blocked the humanitarian supply.” “Food gathers at borders due to systematic obstacles from Israel” said Fletcher during a briefing in Geneva.
The situation in Gaza has deteriorated dramatically since the beginning of March 2025, erstwhile Israel completely halted the supply of aid, before allowing very limited supplies at the end of May, resulting in serious food, medicines and fuel shortages. According to the UN, to meet the basic needs of the population In Gaza, more than 62,000 tonnes of life-saving aid are needed each month.
The IPC study besides indicates the breakdown of the local food system. It is estimated that 98% of the land under cultivation in the Gaza Strip has been destroyed or is inaccessible, livestock has been decimated and fisheries banned. The wellness care strategy has seriously deteriorated, while access to safe drinking water and appropriate hygiene conditions has been drastically restricted.
The situation of children in Gaza is peculiarly worrying. The Ministry of wellness in Gaza reported that 271 people have died so far from starvation, including 112 children. According to the July 2025 data, over 320 000 children in the Gaza Strip, the full population under the age of 5, are at hazard of acute malnutrition and thousands endure from the most severe form of malnutrition.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, unconditional release of all hostages held in Gaza and full humanitarian access throughout the territory. “This is simply a nightmare that must end,” Guterres said. “This is simply a test of our common humanity, a test we cannot afford to fail.”
The Israeli authorities rejected the findings of the IPC report, claiming that “there is no hunger in Gaza”. The Israeli abroad Ministry's message states that IPC's applications are “based on Hamas' lies passed by organizations with their own interests”. Israel besides accused Hamas of systematically stealing humanitarian aid, which would contribute to the crisis.
Humanitarian organisations, including the planet Food Programme (WFP) and UNICEF, are informing that the situation will deteriorate unless immediate action is taken. Cindy McCain, executive manager of WFP, warned: “The terrible suffering of Gaza residents is already visible to the full world. Waiting for authoritative confirmation of the famine to supply life-saving food aid that people desperately request is unacceptable."
More than 100 NGOs from around the planet have called for urgent action by the global community, calling on governments to take decisive steps: beginning all border crossings, restoring full food flow, clean water, medical measures, first-hand articles and fuel, ending the blockade and immediate ceasefire.
The famine disaster in the Gaza Strip is the 4th case in past erstwhile the IPC officially confirmed the famine, after Somalia in 2011, South Sudan in 2017 and 2020, and Sudan in 2024.
Experts agree that, unlike erstwhile cases, the crisis in Gaza is completely avoidable, The political will to guarantee the free movement of humanitarian aid remains a key factor.
