Behind closed doors
Karol Nawrocki's conversation with Viktor Orban in Budapest ended and lasted more than an hour, clearly longer than a short, about fifteen-minute gathering of the Polish president with Hungarian president Tamas Sulyok. After its completion, Nawrocki left the erstwhile Carmelite monastery, the seat of the Prime Minister of Hungary, around 6:20 p.m., and details of the talks were not disclosed.
The gathering was held without media participation, which means that journalists had no access to it and could only study a visit outside the gate of the complex. The Hungarian media devoted small attention to the event, although it was previously pointed out that its aim may be to improve the late damaged relations between Poland and Hungary.
His visit to Hungary was working, according to the President's Office. Earlier that day, the president participated in the authoritative celebrations of the Polish-Hungarian relationship Day in Przemyśl, which was besides attended by the Hungarian president Tamas Sulyok.
During his visit, Karol Nawrocki paid tribute, laying a wreath at the monument of General Józef Bem, who was considered a national hero of both Poland and Hungary.
Sikorski's criticism
I thank the president and the Prime Minister for their fruitful talks! We are united by centuries of common past and common heroes to the nation. Hungary reached out to us erstwhile we defended ourselves against Russian Bolshevikism in 1920, we showed them solidarity in 1956 as the Kremlin imperialism crushed their freedom. We Poles love Hungarians and hatred Putin's war criminal. Russia will always be a threat to us, Hungary an eternal friend – wrote Karol Nawrocki on his social media.
Mr Radosław Sikorski referred to his statements.
Tell me what friends you have, and I'll tell you who you are. – commented on the X platform.
It is worth recalling that Radosław Sikorski previously described Viktor Orban as the most corrupt and pro-Russian politician in Europe, while suggesting that Karol Nawrocki is supporting his election campaign. Marcin Kierwiński, Minister of Interior and Administration, stated on RMF FM that Orban is an ally and favourite of Vladimir Putin.
The Feast of 2 Nations
On Monday, the Chain Bridge in Budapest was highlighted in national colours of Poland and Hungary. Polish-Hungarian relationship Day celebrations are held annually alternately in both countries. Last year they took place in Hungarian Kaposvár, while in 2024 the presidents of both states met in Stary Sącz.
The celebration on 23 March was established in 2007 – first by a decision of the Hungarian Parliament of 12 March, and a fewer days later the same resolution was adopted by the Polish Parliament.
