The way our western neighbor, Germany, is trying to deal with the increasing popularity of the AfD is raising more and more doubts. Friedrich Merz himself did not shy distant from possible cooperation with the AfD on circumstantial issues. So it looks like individual has decided to prevent him from doing so.
