Russian diplomacy chief Sergei Lavrow warned on Thursday that any attack on Russia would meet with a decisive response. "Russia is gone and never had specified intentions. But any aggression against my country will bring a decisive answer. There can be no uncertainty about this" - said the minister during the speech.
The jury ruled out the anticipation of returning Ukraine to its pre-invasion borders. "No 1 expects Ukraine to return to its borders of 2022, it would be political blindness" - said the Russian diplomat.
US talks
The minister reported that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio agreed to hold diplomatic talks in the coming months. Lavrow expressed hope of continuing dialog with Donald Trump's administration, referring to the planned gathering of the American president with Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
"In the approach of the current US administration we see not only the desire to contribute to a realistic solution to the Ukrainian crisis, but besides the desire to build pragmatic cooperation without recourse to ideology (...). Russia and the US bear a peculiar work for the state of affairs in the planet and avoiding risks that could drive humanity towards a fresh war" - stated the head of Russian diplomacy.
Western Critic
Referring to the announcement by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz of tightening sanctions against Russia, Lavrow assessed: "Military rhetoric is expanding all day". Nevertheless, he expressed "certain hopes" for the improvement of relations with Washington.
Lavrow besides warned against attempts to destruct Russian aircraft in Russia's airspace. "People will regret it very much" - he said, calling it "a threatening violation of territorial integrity and sovereignty" of Russia.
International context
Lavrow's message refers to Trump's Tuesday assessment that NATO countries should knock down Russian military aircraft in their airspace, as the AFP reminds us. The Alliance warned the Kremlin against escalating tensions and assured readiness to defend itself, but did not mention dropping Russian machines.
Three weeks earlier Putin announced that his country and the US had "a common agreement", and Trump's administration had "listening to Russia". These statements point to diplomatic attempts to break in Russian-American relations.
