The peculiar forces of Iran and Azerbaijan carry out joint military exercises in the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, reported the Azerbaijani edition of Radio Free Europe, citing the Ministry of Defence of Azerbaijan.

The exercises “Araz-2025” will last until 21 May. The beginning ceremony was held on 19 May.

According to IRNA, the Iranian side of the exercise is attended by troops of the muslim Revolutionary defender Corps. "This is an crucial step towards strengthening the safety of the border area and tackling possible threats," said the Corps representative, Brigadier General Wali Madani.

In April this year, Iran's president Masud Pezeszkian visited Baku and had talks with Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev. "Iran will make all effort to guarantee that relations between our countries scope a strategical level in all areas," he said.

Azerbaijan is simply a close partner of Israel, causing tensions in relations with Iran. The discontent of both sides was peculiarly due to the fact that both countries were organising military exercises close their borders.

In January 2023, there was an attack with the Kalashnikov firearm on the Azerbaijan embassy in Tehran. As a consequence of the incident, an embassy worker was killed and 2 others were injured. After this, diplomats were evacuated to Azerbaijan. The activities of the Azerbaijan embassy in Iran were resumed in July 2024.
