Soldiers from the 2nd Inowrocławska Engineering Regiment began construction of a crossing in the Deaf on the White Deaf River. On October 20, the construction of the bridge is to be soaked over the riverbed, and a fewer days later the bomb squad plans to hand over the finished object to the city authorities. This is the second crossing that the military will put in the Deaf after last year's flood.
The military crossing based on elements of the DMS-65 bridge structure will replace the existing St. Wojciech Bridge in Dłuchołaza, which mostly destroyed last year's flood. Despite the removal of tree canyons, garbage or parts of buildings and the carrying out of makeshift repairs, this crucial object for the city has lost much to its functionality. Only vehicles weighing up to 2,5 tonnes can pass through it in shuttle traffic.
– For this reason it became impossible to get buses or van trucks to 16 families and 3 vacation and rehabilitation centres – says Paweł Szymkowicz, mayor of the city. He adds that setting up a temporary military crossing at this point will let residents and staff of centres and curates to communicate normally. “This will give us time to rebuild the old bridge and reconstruct its full functionality,” says the mayor.
The crossing is built by soldiers 2nd Inowrocław Engineering Regiment. It will be an costly bridge that the military will set after the flood in the Deaf. First specified the crossing was opened last October.
The Hardest Construction
The military's participation in the construction of the current crossing began as early as the end of September. Then, from the warehouses of the Government strategical Reserve Agency, the bomb squad began to drive the elements of the bridge structure to the Deaf. Due to the terrain and construction density around the crossing area, a retention area for bridge components was created nearly a kilometer from the site of the assembly of this structure.
In addition, the soldiers had to harden any sections of the ground road so that military trucks could freely pass on them. Vehicles cannot usage the public road, as there is simply a railway viaduct above it, under which they will not pass the Jelcz truck with a mounted crane of a large HIAB lift.
– It is 1 of the most hard bridges to build, with which we met in the flood areas – says Lt. Beata Sórnak, the contractor and supervision engineer of the works of the Inowrocław unit. The officer oversaw the construction of 7 bridges in the area.
As Sórnak explains, the difficulty is, among another things, that the built structure is 45 m long, so it will be the longest bridge that can be created from DMS-65 elements without utilizing intermediate supports in the riverbed. In addition, in order for the crossing to be assumed a burden capacity of 24 tons, soldiers must mount on the 7 central sections of the bridge a alleged strengthening cap, or peculiar spatial trusse.
These are not all the difficulties military specialists gotta overcome. The full structure is erected in a tiny area between the riverbed and the buildings, and part of the surface is simply a deep ground, where engineering machines barely move. Additionally, there is simply a traffic traffic close the assembly site, as the soldiers did not want to cut off the inhabitants of the access road to their homes.
– car traffic will be closed for only 1 day, erstwhile the ready-made bridge structure weighing about 80 tons will be pushed over the riverbed – explains Sórnak. He adds that the operation is scheduled for next Monday.
Experience and practice
From the 2nd Engineering Regiment to build the bridge, 21 soldiers were appointed to the 1st bridge company of the Road and Bridge Battalion: assembly specialists, HIAB crane operators and transporters. They were joined by 2 subjects of the 5th year of the Academy of the Land Army towards military engineering: kpr. pchor. Paulina Witos and kpr. pchor. Hubert Grąz. – We observe the performance of individual activities, and erstwhile we request to be active in the work. This gives us an thought of how in the future we should manage akin teams of people – the AWL listeners state.
The platoon, commanded by Lieutenant Kamil Czech, has 2 Jelcz cars with HIAB crane, 2 universal engineering machines, Jelcz and Volvo trucks and 2 IVECOs. “The construction works well from the beginning, due to the fact that my subordinates are experienced soldiers and, what is very crucial in this kind of work, it is simply a good team, in which everyone has circumstantial tasks and is able to execute them efficiently,” says the Czech Republic.
The sappers are besides praised by Mayor Deaf, stressing that the military is always working on the highest possible assessment. – Military specialists from Inowrocław have already proven themselves in our city during the construction of the first bridge a year ago. Now they are doing quite a few good for the inhabitants again, and we are very grateful to them for that," Szymkowicz emphasizes. I want the bridge ready by the end of next week.
According to Cr. Syrnak, this is not the last crossing that bomb squads are working on in the flood area. – most likely at the turn of the year we will build another bridge with elements of DMS-65, this time in Bolesławec in Lower Silesia. However, it will be a construction not for motor traffic, but for pedestrians," says the officer.
