Cyber LEGION is preparing for the 21st century war. MON volunteers have thousands

Every day Poland repels hundreds of thousands of cyber attacks, and the Ministry of National Defence does not intend to look passively. MON reported that thousands of volunteers have already volunteered for the recently formed Cyber LEGION. 99 percent went through verification.


National Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced on Monday in Krakow that the number of candidates for Cyber LEGION exceeded his wildest expectations. It was assumed that around 400 people would be present in the first months. Meanwhile, there are 5 times more. And 99 percent of them passed the verification procedures.

Cyber LEGION is the state's consequence to the expanding number of attacks in cyberspace, peculiarly on critical infrastructure and companies of the Treasury. MON focuses on symbiosis of military and civilian environment – programmers, artificial intelligence experts and network safety specialists. "You are very much needed Poland," said the head of MON to the AGH University of discipline and Technology in Kraków.

Attacks on railways and waterworks. The military works in the shadows


Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz recalled that Poland has been struggling for many months with constant attempts to disrupt the functioning of critical infrastructure. The victims are not only railways or energy networks, but besides waterworks that "need and receive support". The Defence Action is actively active in the Command of the Cyberspace defence Army (DKWOC), whose function has been explicitly highlighted by the head of the MON.



Previous operations, including Operation Solid Turtles and Operation Horizon, were besides mentioned. The formation of Cyber LEGION, however, is simply a step further, towards building systemic resilience utilizing the possible of the civilian environment.

Thousands willing to service in cyberspace


Cyber LEGION is very interested. Already there are about 2,000 candidates – specialists and enthusiasts ready to service cognition and experience. For them, MON will prepare dedicated training and courses to aid full exploit their possible in defence activities.

The head of the MON pointed out that the geopolitical situation does not let passive expectation. Regardless of the continuation of the war in Ukraine, Poland must systematically strengthen its defence capabilities. Cyber LEGION is 1 of the pillars of this strategy.

Cyber LEGION is an investment in the future of defence of our country. MON focuses on people whose competences may decide to defend the state not on the front but in server rooms, SCADA systems and in cyberspace. The future of defence will not always have a soldier's face with a rifle. Sometimes it'll be a computer with a laptop.
