German abroad Minister Johann Wadephul assured that Germany would not push the tightening of migration policy against Poland's will. "Of course, we'll discuss this with you," Wadephul said on Thursday, May 8, on Deutschlandfunk radio.
He added that Germany would proceed “step by step” – as announced by Home Minister Alexander Dobrindt. Steps will be taken "consciously and prudently" and "always in coordination with European friends and colleagues".
MSW Germany: stepping up border controls
The fresh head of the German MMA Alexander Dobrindt announced on Wednesday (07.05.2025) a tightening of border controls to reduce the number of refugees. To this end, more national police officers are to be stationed on the border, and asylum seekers will be turned around. Exceptions are intended for children and pregnant women.
During a Wednesday visit of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to Warsaw, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that it would be essential to talk about "no facts or even the impression that anyone, including Germany, would want to send any groups of immigrants to Poland". “Poland will not accept this,” said Tusk.
Warsaw and Berlin mean the same thing
Tusk's main message was the same as Germany's statement," commented the head of German diplomacy. "To make external borders of the EU back and control migration to Europe". It is besides a "very broad European consensus". With respect to migration movements, everyone in Europe knows that "Germany is the destination country par excellence".
Poland belongs to “the closest partners and friends of Germany”, Johann Wadephul stressed. He added that home ministers would shortly discuss further steps on migration.
