U.S. president Donald Trump had a telephone conversation on 19 May with the president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenski, reported CNN station. According to the agency Reuters, citing sources in the White House, shortly after this conversation there was besides to be contact between Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin.

The conversation with Putin, as stated, was to focus on the anticipation of achieving peace in Ukraine. It was originally planned that contact with the Kremlin would first take place and then with Kiev, but the agenda changed.

U.S. Vice president J. D. Vance stated Trump intended to straight ask Putin about his willingness to end the war.

“Do you truly want peace? Russia could have considerable economical benefits if it had changed its policy, but these gains are impossible as long as there is simply a meaningless bloodshed," Vance stressed.

According to the vice president, the Russian side has already taken any steps towards deescalation, but the dynamics of the negotiation process is weakening, so Trump decided to intervene personally.

White home spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt told journalists that Trump "is tired and disappointed by both sides of the conflict", adding that his goal is "to accomplish ceasefire and end this war."
