Intervention of German Police

On Tuesday before 16 o'clock, about 15 activists of the Border defence Movement gathered at Skulpturenpark close Reichstag, in Berlin's Tiergarten. Participants brought a wooden cross and banners relating to German crimes from planet War II and reparation issues.

The Berlin police reported that they deemed the assembly to be an unreported demonstration. The officers, with the aid of a translator, offered participants to decision the demonstration to another location or to go under the boulder individually. Robert Bąkiewicz refused these terms.

After singing “Rota”, participants moved with the cross and banners towards the memorial site. Then the police began to intervene. Recordings published on social media show officers subduing convention participants and turning them to the ground. Conflicting Relations

In the evening, Berlin police published a message in which they informed that activists with banners, a large wooden cross and raising shouts wanted to decision towards the Polish memorial site. However, the officers did not agree to specified a march and, through a translator, offered participants to organize a stationary assembly in the park or to go to the memorial site individually.

When the group, despite the ban, moved together with the cross and banners towards the monument, our services conducted six interventions limiting freedom of movement. due to this resistance, our services have besides applied coercion measures. Upon completion of the police activities, all persons were released – we can read in the available message.

Policy responses

The Ministry of abroad Affairs confirmed that there was a police intervention in Berlin during which 1 individual was detained. Ministry spokesperson Maciej Wewiór reported that the consul is conducting findings on the circumstances of the incidental and the reasons for the detention, without revealing additional details.

The event sparked fast reactions from right-wing politicians. Jarosław Kaczyński publically asked about the operation of the Polish embassy and the MFA. The head of the group assessed that the actions of the German services were highly brutal and, in his opinion, showed the attitude of the German State to neighbouring nations. In a published comment, he stated that the way Polish citizens were treated in Berlin shows that Germany did not account for its Nazi and imperial past, nor for its attitude towards Poles. At the same time, he asked about the reaction of the Polish embassy in Berlin and the Ministry of abroad Affairs.

In turn Przemysław Czarnek called for "the immediate reaction of the Polish government", assessing the actions of the Berlin police as compromising for the German authorities.

Tomasz Sakiewicz besides referred to the protest, who called on Poles to meet in the evening in front of the German embassy in Warsaw.
