Xi Jinping: “Those who win have been planning everything from the start”

On Wednesday 31 December 2025, China's president Xi Jinping gave an yearly fresh Year's speech broadcast by the state tv station CCTV.

Xi said China "has reached a fresh level this year" in terms of economy, technology and national defence. As the most crucial events of the year, he distinguished the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the end of planet War II, which China calls a triumph over Japan's aggression, and the establishment of the 25 October "Day of Memory for the Restoration of Taiwan".

Xi Jinping summed up the completion of the 14th Five-Year Plan, stressing the accomplishment of all major economical and social objectives, including the expected GDP of 140 trillion RMB. He distinguished advancement in technology and innovation: the improvement of his own integrated circuits, the commercialization of large AI models, the Tianwen-2 mission and the introduction of the first Chinese aircraft carrier with an electromagnetic catapult into service.

In the social and cultural spheres, he noted an increase in interest in cultural heritage, the improvement of tourism, sports (e.g. "superliga" football) and support for families with children and additional social safety for workers of courier companies. In the global dimension, it addressed the success of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in Tianjin, global initiatives (including Global Governance Initiative) and climate commitments.

"Today's planet is full of turmoil and any regions are inactive plagued by war," Xi said, referring to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, the situation in the mediate East or Venezuela. Xi added that "China has always stood on the right side of history", which was a mention to a telephone conversation with Donald Trump in which the Chinese leader stressed that China and the US fought together during planet War II against fascism and militarism.

Addressing economical issues Xi said that China has become "one of the fastest increasing economies in terms of innovation". He mentioned fast advancement in artificial intelligence models and "breakthrough achievements" in the improvement of native chips.

"We are inactive beginning up to the planet with open arms," said Xi, citing events specified as the authoritative launch of Hainan duty-free port at the beginning of this month.

He besides pointed out that 2026 would be the first year of the fresh Chinese five-year plan. The draft national action plan identifies technological self-sufficiency and industrial modernisation as key priorities, while at the same time aiming at a "significant" increase in the share of consumption in the economy. Xi besides stressed "new manufacturing forces" as the foundation of advanced quality Chinese modernisation.

“Those who start bravely will surely succeed,” Xi said. "Those who win plan everything from the start".
