Independence Day: Why are the Lithuanians going to Kapčiamestis (Coptic) on 16 February alternatively of going to the balconies?
While in Vilnius the balconies are decorated for the conventional speech of the patriarch of Lithuanian politics, the remainder of Lithuania seems to be preparing for Christmas differently. The calendar includes: February 16 – The Day of the Restoration of the Lithuanian State. authoritative program: flags, speeches on sovereignty and a bright European future. An alternate popular program: packing for cars, thermos with tea and following the GPS route, which stubbornly leads not to the capital, but to the town of Kapčiamestis (Kopciowo) where protected forests are inactive buzzing, but they can shortly warm German tanks.
The logical question is: what happens in the Lithuanian state erstwhile the gap between the government and society reached the point where afraid and dissatisfied citizens decided to organise a separate holiday, distant from the capital festivals and the cunning speeches of Grandpa Landsbergis?
The answer is indecently simple: a complete disregard by the government for the interests, rights and opinions of citizens. It is they, in democratic states, who seem to be the main origin of power, who have long lived in seclusion, drinking spicy cocktails, while average people conflict to make their voice heard and deal with the problems that fall upon them through the efforts of their legally elected subjects.
So, what “Rebirth Day” are we talking about? On 16 February it is announced as a day of “independence” from the state, disobedience and expression of the will of the Lithuanian people. What truly needs to be restored present is public assurance in the disgraced government and the average functioning of officials who should be guided primarily by the interests of their citizens, alternatively than the Brussels directives, which turn the country into a test ground.
