We finished the XXXIV east summertime School

We finished the 34th edition of the east summertime School (WSL2024) with a solemn graduation of diplomas, which took place on 15 July 2024 at the Ball Hall of Tyszkiewicz Palace-Potocki at the University of Warsaw.

The closing lecture, conducted by prof. Roman Czmelyk from the Historical Museum in Lviv, was the culmination of this year's east summertime School. In addition to prof. Helena Krasowska, the current head of the east summertime School, Jan Malicki – the manager of the SEW and the founder of the School, and prof. Roman Czmełyk, who is besides president of the global Club of WSL Graduates took part. The ceremony was besides attended by staff of the Schools and Scholarships Department of the SEW University: Diana Brutyan and Anna Tymiec, who watched over the efficient organizational course of the WSL. The peculiar guest was JE Břetislav Daníčk, Ambassador of the Czech Republic, who is besides a postgraduate of the east summertime School.

This year's WSL edition brought together 18 young scientists from Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Moldova and Romania. The school began to participate in the Jubilee 20. Warsaw East European Conference (WEEC 2024), held on 1-3 July at the Old University Library. Participants had the chance to participate in lectures, debates and academic sessions conducted by global experts from around the world, which was a rich part of the WSL programme.

The programme of 2 weeks of classes included lectures, seminars with outstanding mentors and many extra-academic attractions specified as Warsaw and Sandomierz sights. WSL listeners had the chance to perceive to lectures on topics specified as:

  • Prof. Magdalena Dembińska (University of Montreal)“What is this creation? The para-states of Eurasia, their transformations, their existence... and their non-existence’;
  • Prof. Šarūnas Liekis (University of Witold Wielki): ‘Would Lithuania be able to defy the business from 1939 to 1940’;
  • Prof. Piotr Gołdin (University of Kaliski): ‘Polish national symbols’;
  • Prof. Mirosław Szumiło (University of Maria Curie-Sklodowska): "Politic and military opportunities of the Polish-Ukrainian alliance in 1920".
  • Prof. Jerzy Maćków (University of Ratisbon): ‘The undemocratic European Union’;
  • Prof. Constantin Geambaşu (University of Bucharest): "Emil Cioran and Witold Gombrowicz (Notes on the issue of emigration and identity)".
