The draft amendments to the EU regulation governing the rights of passengers of airlines voted by the Committee on Transport and Tourism (TRAN) of the European Parliament amazed everyone - not only carriers but travellers themselves. Until now, airlines have had full freedom to lay down rules on hand baggage, which frequently resulted in additional charges, frustration and confusion at airports. Now Euro MPs want to introduce uniform, more transparent rules. If the proposal comes into force, it can change the way we fly across Europe.

According to Article 11a, which the Committee on Transport and Tourism proposes to add to Regulation (EC) No 261/2004, each passenger would be entitled to carry on board 1 part of hand baggage of at least 55x40x20 centimetres and 7 kilograms. Importantly, no extra charges. The carrier could only refuse in case of circumstantial method limitations on the machine.
Air carriers may not charge any additional fees or surcharges to the ticket price for this service. The carrier may refuse to let specified hand baggage on board only for safety reasons related to the mass or size of the item in the light of the characteristics of the aircraft concerned.

This is simply a completely fresh approach to an issue that has been stimulating the emotions of travellers for years. So far, airlines, especially those low-cost airlines, have made millions on extra pay for compartment cases. frequently the rules were unclear, and unexpected payments only appeared at the goal. MEPs decided it was time to end this.
