Controversy around Anti-corruption
On July 22, 2024, the Ukrainian parliament passed a bill which was received as limiting the independency of the National Anti-corruption Office and the Specialist Anti-corruption Prosecutor's Office. This sparked global criticism and national protests, prompting the authorities to retreat from this legislative movement.
In its enlargement report, the European Commission reiterated its advice to strengthen Ukrainian anti-corruption institutions. In the EC assessment, Ukraine has achieved any level of preparation in the fight against corruption, but only limited advancement has been recorded in this area.
