The Politico Service has revealed a draft law of the European Commission which may initiate a crucial change in the economical policy of the European Union. The document, known as the "competitiveness compass", points to the planned deregulation of the Green Deal climate legislation. This fresh economical doctrine can convey a crucial modification of the EU's priorities, including the suspension of certain restrictions on climate policy.

An unprecedented effort to simplify the rules

The bill states that ‘Kothe mission will carry out an unprecedented effort to simplify the rules." Special emphasis is to be placed on regulations on sustainable financing and reporting by companies. It is already foreseen in February to print the first part of government to improve these provisions. However, as the paper shows, this is only the beginning of a broad legislative process.

Political voices: courage and revision

Prime Minister Donald Tusk, commenting on the current situation, pointed to advanced energy prices in the EU as a consequence of the introduction of fresh climate legislation. He pointed out that many of these provisions have not yet entered into force and that they already have a negative impact on the economy and the costs to citizens. According to Tusk, it is essential to "review all legal acts, including those under the Green Deal" and "the courage to change provisions that may lead to excessive energy prices".

European People's Party: a call to postpone Green Deal

The loudest calls for revision of the Green Deal come from the European People's organization (EPP). During the last gathering of leaders of this faction, dominated by German representatives, a paper was drawn up calling for a postponement for at least 2 years of implementation of the key Green Deal regulations. This includes provisions on sustainable financing and the CO2 limit tax.

Votes of objection: situation in Romania

Romanian energy minister Sebastian Burduja announced the preparation of a study on the negative effects of Green Deal policy on his country. The Minister stressed the importance of national natural gas resources and conventional coal-based capacity. For Romania, the Green Deal represents an economical challenge, which requires adaptation to fresh realities among rising energy costs.

The future of Green Deal: a debate is needed

In the face of the European Commission's revealed plans, there are expanding calls for a broad debate on the future of the Union's climate policy. Both Green Deal supporters and its critics emphasise that the forthcoming decisions will be crucial for the EU economy and the energy situation of the associate States.

The Competitiveness Compasse is an effort to reconcile economical interests with climate neutrality. Will this fresh strategy let the European Union to keep its leadership in the fight against climate change while responding to the needs of the associate States? Time will show what decisions EU leaders will make in the coming months.
