Former UK Prime Minister Sir Tony Blair is set to join an interim authority governing Gaza under Donald Trump's new 20-point peace plan. The US President revealed the proposal as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threw his support behind it at a press conference on Monday.

Trump stated they are "beyond very close" to a peace agreement, calling this day "potentially one of the great days ever in civilisation". The plan calls for an immediate ceasefire, withdrawal of Israeli forces to "the agreed upon line", release of all hostages, followed by Palestinian prisoner releases and a surge of aid into Gaza.

Board of Peace structure

Gaza would be temporarily governed by a transitional committee of Palestinian and international experts under oversight from a new body called the "Board of Peace". Trump will chair this international body, working alongside other leaders including Blair.

The Board of Peace will set the framework and handle funding for Gaza's redevelopment until the Palestinian Authority undergoes sufficient reform to take control. Trump told reporters: "It will be headed by a gentleman known as President Donald J Trump of the United States."

Blair's involvement confirmed

Trump confirmed Blair's participation, describing him as a "good man, very good man" who "wants to be on the board". The US President said other distinguished leaders will be named over the next few days, adding: "Everybody wants to be on it now."

Blair previously served as Middle East envoy for the quartet of international powers after leaving office, focusing on economic development in Palestine. He has recently participated in high-level planning talks with the US about Gaza's future, including a White House meeting with Trump in August.

Political responses

Blair praised Trump's plan as "bold and intelligent", thanking him for his willingness to chair the Board of Peace. He said: "President Trump has put down a bold and intelligent plan which, if agreed, can end the war, bring immediate relief to Gaza, the chance of a brighter and better future for its people, whilst ensuring Israel's absolute and enduring security and the release of all hostages."

Netanyahu hailed the plan as a "critical step" towards peace, saying it "achieves our war aims" and will dismantle Hamas's military capabilities. However, he warned that if Hamas rejects the plan, "Israel will finish the job by itself."

Diplomatic developments

Netanyahu also confirmed he had apologised to Qatar's Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani for the Israeli strike in Qatar on September nine. He said he regrets "the loss of Qatari citizens", who were not the target of the strikes.

Current status

While Israel and Arab countries like the United Arab Emirates support the plan, Hamas has not yet agreed to it. Trump warned on Tuesday that if Hamas rejects the deal, Netanyahu would have his "full backing to do what you would have to do".

The US President emphasised that "the ultimate result must be the elimination of any danger posed in the region, and that danger is caused by Hamas". Further developments in the peace negotiations are expected in the coming days.
