Donald Trump's policy importantly affected the global perception of the United States. His approach, based on the American First slogan ("America above all"), led to a clear erosion of the U.S.'s ability to rise allies and to weakening their impact due to the attractiveness of its own culture, democratic values and abroad policy. Trump seeks to replace global cooperation with military and economical force tools.
The consequences of this policy may lead to:
to increase China's global influence,
to reconstruct authoritarian tendencies, including in countries with established democratic traditions.
1. Isolationism and withdrawal from global agreements
Decisions to leave key global agreements undermined the credibility of the US as a unchangeable partner and weakened their position as the leader of the global order.
2. Transactional approach to diplomacy
Trump saw global relations in purely business terms – profit and failure balance. This approach weakened conventional alliances, including with NATO and the European Union, and discouraged countries that have so far seen the US as a guardian of democratic values. As a result, this opened up space for the emergence in the influence of authoritarian regimes besides in the democratic world.
3. Image of leadership
The President's chaotic and confrontational rhetoric, as well as questioning democratic institutions, has negatively affected the attractiveness of the "American model" in the eyes of the public in the world.
4. Weakening of “educational magnet”
Visa restrictions and anti-immigration rhetoric led to a decline in the number of abroad students and specialists in the US, thus limiting the ability to form pro-American elites in another countries.
5. Erosion of improvement diplomacy
Foreign aid cuts have deprived the United States of crucial tools of influence in developing countries.
The Trump administration in practice weakened the prestige and moral leadership of the U.S. in the world. As a result, where the United States has limited its presence – whether in global institutions or in individual regions – and where they have lost their trust, China is increasingly bold with its own alternate offer.
