The Washington Peace Council was to be a major debate on the future of the Gaza Strip. The gathering is to oversee the implementation of the U.S. peace plan and mobilise gigantic funds to rebuild the destroyed land. There was not only pure politics there, but we besides heard a fewer "golden thoughts" of the host.
Donald Trump compliments (?) president Paraguay
During his speech, Donald Trump in a alternatively peculiar way thanked for the presence of Paraguayan President, Santiago Peña. "President, thank you very much. Young, handsome guy. It's always good to be young and handsome," said Donald Trump.
Then he caused awkward laughter in the area with another remark. "It doesn't mean we gotta like you. I don't like young, handsome men. Women? I like these. Men don't... I'm not curious in them," said the president of the United States.
Who's "young, handsome" 47-year-old Santiago Peña?
For 79-year-old Trump, Peña is indeed a "young man". And not only due to the fact that even for a 47-year-old president, it's an different age. However, he is not a coincidence and is an experienced politician and economist.
In his country, he went on a long professional journey to get to the top. He previously worked as an economist for the Central Bank of Paraguay and the global Monetary Fund and served as Minister of Finance.
Peña took office as president of Paraguay in August 2023, erstwhile he competed for the Conservative Colorado organization (previously for 20 years he was a Liberal). He became the youngest president of the country since the restoration of democracy in 1989.
His presidency has been emotional all along. Opponents claimed that he may stay the "secretary" of his mentor, erstwhile president Horacio Cartes, and is constantly being reprimanded for deficiency of independence. Among another things, Z-generation protests broke out against his presidency.
Trump called his wife "a movie star" and again talked about the Nobel Prize
Trump's performance wasn't limited to beauty jokes. The U.S. president mentioned unlucky events from the past, as the teleprompter disabled during the UN session or the escalator failure.
"I was fortunate that my wife, a movie star (referring to Melanie's documentary, which turned out to be a flop - ed.), was in front of me due to the fact that I put my hand on a certain part of her body and managed to halt my fall," Trump recalled, as reported to People.com.
The president besides referred to his obsession with the Nobel Prize awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Committee. In 2025 this award was won by María Corina Machado, who then passed on to him (the medal itself, the title not).
Trump admitted that he saw a note on which was "Norway proudly announce...", but it was about the location of the next gathering of the Council of Peace, not the award. "I thought, "Oh, great, I get Nobel! Finally, they did it well," he commented with irony. However, he emphasized that he was more curious in "saving lives" than prestige.
Despite all these anecdotes, there have besides been circumstantial financial declarations. Trump announced that members of the council had declared $7 billion to aid Gaza, and the US would add another 10 billion to it. However, NBC reports that the American legislature has not yet approved specified massive spending.
