The Germans announced the discovery of mass graves in Katyn on April 13, 1943. Today, that day has become a symbolic anniversary of the crime. Just 2 days later, on April 15, 1943, in consequence to German reports, Moscow announced that the Polish prisoners had been employed in construction work west of Smolensk and "fell into the hands of German fascist executioners in the summertime of 1941, after the withdrawal of russian troops from the Smolensk region."
