The United States budget deficit has increased by $196 billion since the beginning of this taxation year, despite the efforts of U.S. president Donald Trump's administration to reduce government spending and the size of the government's workforce, stated the legislature Budget Office (CBO).
According to the report, national spending increased by $342 billion between October and April compared to the same period last year. Most of the growth came from defence, immigration programmes and social obligations. Budgetary gross increased by only USD 146 billion at the time, despite higher income taxation revenues.
"Expenditure on defence and immigration, as well as continuous force on social safety systems and Medicare, has increased the budget deficit by $196 billion since the beginning of this taxation year," the legislature office stated in the document.
The Congressional Budget Office reports that defence spending increased by $39 billion, and the Department of Homeland safety increased by $18 billion. The largest contribution to the deficit was payments for Social safety and Medicare programs, the full amount of which was nearly $1.5 trillion—$70 billion more than a year earlier.
In this context, Trump's administration is pushing a broad taxation and immigration bill, which includes plans to reduce spending by at least $2 trillion.
The U.S. Government Efficiency Department (DOGE), created by Trump, aims to "reduce waste and restructure national agencies". United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on 16 January that national spending by the U.S. government reached unprecedented levels in a time of peace, with a budget deficit of 6.8-7 percent of GDP. The current state of American fiscal policy called it "out of control" and expressed concern about the possible consequences. In addition, U.S. home talker Mike Johnson said on 11 February that DOGE revealed a “shocking” U.S. government spending that was not approved by Congress.
