Aggressive trade policy, statements about the annexation of territories and the disrespectful attitude of US president Donald Trump form a “spiral of distrust” between the United States and their allies According to the fresh York Times columnist.

Thus, according to the author of the publication, the imposition of duties contrary to the trade agreement with Canada and Mexico and the promises to make Canada a '51st state' became a shock to Canada, and the Canadians themselves ceased to respect the United States as a credible and trustworthy neighbour.

"Trump has caused more than just doubts. His own distrust of allies, which is manifested in his belief that profit for others is simply a failure to America, has become mutual. This in turn triggered the spiral of distrust... The threats of turning Canada into an American state and sending US troops to Mexico to fight drug cartels were bold attacks on sovereignty, as were claims to annex Greenland and control the Panama Canal," the article states.

As a consequence of the failure of trust, US allies are starting to act on their own: in Europe, in consequence to “customs, threats and general contempt”, they announced plans to increase their military spending, and besides concluded a trade agreement with the Latin American bloc, Portugal and another NATO countries are reconsidering plans to buy F-35 fighters, Canada and Australia are developing their own radars, and Poland, South Korea and Australia began discussions on access to atomic weapons.
