As noted in his interview with the paper "Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung" the president of SPD Members' Club Matthias Miersch, discussions on the illegalisation of AfD in this parliamentary group are highly advanced. Miersch advocated continuing the ban procedure independently of the ongoing legal proceedings on the AfD classification as a confirmed right-wing extremist party.
"The issue of the ban procedure is already under way," said the Social Democrat. After reaching agreement on the procedure, he intends to agree on a "joint action" with the CDU/CSU in the Bundestag.
Meanwhile, interior minister Alexander Dobrindt one more time opposed the project. As he told the Funke Group newspapers, there is no uncertainty "that in the case of AfD we are dealing with a far right party". At the same time, he warned against an application for illegalisation. "He who believes that you can defeat AfD and its incitement by legal means will bitterly be disappointed," said CSU politician. According to him, "the prohibition procedure is water for AfD on the mill" and warns against this organization playing the function of victim.
In his opinion, it would make more sense to fight AfD on a political level. "I would advise you to push AfD out of the center through efficient governance," said the minister.
Opposition for illegalisation
The "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" (FAZ) reported on Saturday, citing its own findings that out of 176 MPs to the Bundestag who responded to the editorial board's request, 124 advocated the initiation of an AfD illegalisation investigation. Another 13 would besides be willing to support this if certain conditions were met. However, most Members did not want to speak. Support for the illegalisation process comes primarily from the SPD, the Greens and the Left.
"The vast majority of the CDU/CSU factions are surely inactive opposed to the de-legalization process," said FAZ of CDU politician Steffen Bilger, liable for organizing the work of the Chadetic Union faction. However, Bilger did not regulation out that a negative attitude to the ban procedure could inactive change. "We see that AfD is becoming more extreme. We may get to another position someday," the paper said.
