Shanghai Pudong global Airport (chin. 上海浦东国际机场) started building a 3rd terminal, which aims to increase the capacity of this busiest airport in China in terms of the number of passengers.
This is the 4th phase of the airport's expansion, with a capacity of 80 million passengers per year. The first terminal was opened in 1999, to mark the 50th anniversary of the proclamation of the People's Republic of China. Shanghai Pudong global Airport was created to make a key hub for home and global flights in Shanghai, especially on transpacific and European routes. This goal could not be achieved by HongQiao Shanghai Airport, which is located in the city center.
In 2008, a second terminal was put into service in Pudong and in 2019 2 additional satellite halls (S1 and S2), which are not straight connected to terminals. The plan and planning of the 3rd terminal began in 2022, and its construction starts this year – after 2 years of preparation.
The investment will be completed by 2028, which means 6 years after the decision to launch the investment. The T3 terminal will have 90 contact positions (so-called sleeves) for aircraft, which is the largest number of all airports in the country. The fresh terminal will increase the passenger service capacity at Pudong Airport by an additional 50 million people per year.
The task aims at maximising the process of getting passengers to aircraft. The largest walking distance to the entrance gates for global flights will be 650 metres, which will translate into about 8.5 minutes of march. For home flights, this distance will be 450 metres, which passengers will travel for about 6 minutes.
The task includes the construction of a fresh T3 terminal building, an underground transport junction (a metro station, a railway station, an intercity bus station), a cargo region and another auxiliary facilities, including a hotel.
The investment is estimated at RMB 38.76 billion (approximately PLN 22 billion).
After completion of the expansion, Pudong Airport will be able to handle:
- 130 million passengers a year,
- 805,000 flights,
- Six million tons of cargo.
The airport will have 3 terminals with a full area of more than 1.7 million square meters, 2 satellite halls and 4 runways.
PS. In 2023, the number of passengers utilizing Pudong Airport was 54.25 million. The second global airport in the city, Hongqiao global Airport (chin. 虹桥国际机场), served 42.5 million passengers (located at the high-speed railway station). During the first 10 months of 2024, 64.3 million passengers already benefited from Pudong Airport, taking first place among civilian airports in China.
