– I will besides be the voice of those Poles who want average Poland. Poland attached to its values, Poland with a good Polish school, with Polish literature and with Polish readings at the Polish school – said Karol Nawrocki in the Sejm just after his oath to President.
The head of the Ministry of National Education referred to these words on Polsat News. At first she stated that Nawrocki's speech was so bad, it was "funny".
Nowacka responds to Nawrocki's words about reading
– I ask myself, is this what he means, as he says: "only Polish readings", so that what, to retreat the Bible, introduce Batyr into the obligatory canon of reading? – ironically Barbara Nowacka said.
Let us remind you that Tadeusz Batyr is the literary pseudonym of Karol Nawrocki, under which the fresh president wrote a book entitled "The Confession of Nikosi from beyond the grave".
– My premise is, and I will stick to it consistently, that it is not politicians who make the list of readings. It was in Nierk's time that he knew better what young people would read and what teachers would want to do with them. It's over. [...] I care about a smart, open, friendly, teaching on the highest standards of Polish, European school – stressed the head of the MEN.
New Reading List
– Does he (Nawrocki – ed.) want to bring the school back to the past, put it into the world? Does he want Polish youth to leave school, of course, prepared, smart, patriotic, but besides able to compete in the planet economy? Does she want Polish youth to read only Polish books? – she asked rhetorically.
– I want her to know the full canon of literature: from Shakespeare through Scripture to Marquez and Olga Tokarczuk, who is besides important, she concluded.
Let us remind that last year Barbara Nowack presented a fresh list of readings. Adam Mickiewicz's ballads disappeared. There was a place for Olga Tokarczuk. In contrast, from specified titles as "Mr Tadeusz" or "Quo Vadis" students will learn fragments.
