Paweł Rubcow, a Russian spy operating in Poland, was to monitor US intelligence colleagues in Europe and candidates for specified collaborators. This information was provided by the Spanish paper ‘El Mundo’.
The newspaper, based on the data gathered on Rubcov by the Polish judiciary, called it in its article "spy". This changes the rhetoric of Spanish media in Spain, which had previously defended the alleged journalist-freelancer.
Some of them even claimed that the man detained in 2022 by the Polish service was "indecently arrested while doing journalism".
"The false writer Pablo Gonzalez spied on US intelligence service associates in east Europe" wrote "El Mundo" on Tuesday.
One evidence of specified activity by Rubcov is, as the diary reported, a 2019 Russian paper requisitioned by Polish services during the detention of the spy.
"He reported to the GRU (Russian military intelligence – PAP) from Georgia and Ukraine about the Americans and developed information materials on them," he revealed "El Mundo".
Gonzalez besides prepared in Russian, for the purposes of the GRU, profiles of the people in whom he revolved. Among them were people met, among others, during the summertime school of journalism in Prague, organized by the Boris Niemców Foundation.
According to the investigation file, Rubcow entered the ellipse of people from the leadership of this organization, and even established a “feeling relationship” with German daughter, Zanna.
One of the people watched by Rubcov was summertime school associate Justin Tomczyk in Prague. The alleged writer was expected to compose about him that he was an American resident in Armenia, which in the future might be uncomfortable for the Kremlin due to his anti-Russian views. He described him as a good candidate for American intelligence services.
"El Mundo", based on the Polish investigation, stated that Rubcow, through his own Eulixe website, was spreading pro-Russian propaganda. 5 days before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, he published a text on it suggesting that neo-Nazi organizations recruit militants in the country.
The investigation, as the paper noted, showed that the Eulixe portal was developed with the approval of the GRU, and the material from this site was utilized for hybrid activities conducted by the Kremlin.
The Spanish paper found that Rubcow besides collected "information on infrastructure crucial to Poland's safety", and besides made available to Russia data on at least 3 editions of military exercises on the camp close Lviv.
Rubcow was handed over to Russia on 1 August this year during the exchange of prisoners between the West and Russia, conducted in Ankara.
The next day, after Rubcov was released, articles about Rubcov’s “innocentness” were published in Spanish media, which his lawyers argued. At the time, a fewer media coverage of the cooperation between the GRU and the man.
