NEW DELHI- India’s aviation industry generates $53.6 billion in total contribution to the country’s GDP. It supports 7.7 million jobs across the broader economy, according to recent industry data.

International Travel Patterns

International air traffic accounted for 21% of total origin-destination departures from India in 2023, representing 33.9 million passenger departures.

The Middle East emerged as the largest international market for passenger flows from India. It captures 41% of international traffic, followed by Asia Pacific at 28% and Europe at 15%.

Dubai is the most popular international destination in India, with 4.42 million passengers. It is followed by London with 1.70 million, Singapore with 1.58 million, Sharjah with 1.25 million, and Abu Dhabi with 1.22 million passengers. These destinations reflect India’s strong connectivity to business and leisure markets across multiple regions.

Air Connectivity Growth

India’s international air connectivity index decreased by 4.0% within the Asia Pacific region since 2014, while increasing by 59% in all other regions during the same period, IATA reported.

This data indicates India’s expanding global reach beyond traditional Asian markets. This strengthened connections to Europe, the Middle East, and other international destinations.

Passenger onward travel patterns reveal that 85% of international arrivals either completed their journeys at Indian entry points or continued using alternative transportation modes.

Additionally, 13% of arriving international passengers are connected to domestic flights. 2% of passengers continued to other foreign destinations, highlighting India’s role as both a destination and transit hub.

IndiGo CEO: India is the World’s Hottest Aviation Market

IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers characterized India as the “world’s hottest aviation market” during a comprehensive industry interview with IATA Airlines Magazine. He compared the country’s current growth phase to previous aviation booms in the United States, Europe, and China.

Elbers emphasized that India’s aviation metrics, including aircraft-to-population ratios, seat availability, and passport holder numbers, all indicate increasing demand for air travel services.

The CEO positioned aviation as integral to India’s socio-economic growth agenda and employment generation. He stated that IndiGo (6E) connects diverse communities while “giving wings to the nation by connecting people and aspirations.”

This perspective reflects the broader industry view of aviation as a catalyst for economic development across India’s vast geography.

Three-Element Strategy

Elbers outlined IndiGo’s three-element strategy for serving India’s rapidly growing aviation market, beginning with straightforward expansion to accommodate projected demand doubling by the decade’s end.

The airline operates with the world’s largest aircraft order book, exceeding 900 aircraft, reflecting confidence in sustained market growth.

IndiGo (6E) expanded from serving 75 million customers pre-COVID in 2019 to 113 million customers in 2024. It welcomed one million new customers every three days.

The airline receives an average of one new aircraft weekly for almost the entire next decade. It provided natural insulation against supply chain fluctuations while maintaining expansion momentum.

Product Diversification

The second strategic element involves product diversification beyond traditional low-cost carrier operations.

IndiGo (6E) introduced IndiGoStretch premium services on the nation’s busiest routes, operating 40 daily sectors between Delhi (DEL) and Mumbai (BOM) and 30 daily sectors between Delhi (DEL) and Bengaluru (BLR), with plans for metro route expansion.

Additional service diversification includes freighter operations, loyalty programs, and hotel marketplace partnerships.

Elbers described IndiGo (6E) as a hybrid airline maintaining a low-cost base while adapting to evolving customer demands, representing a departure from classic low-cost carrier behavior patterns.

International Expansion Targets

IndiGo’s third strategic element focuses on internationalisation, addressing what Elbers characterized as India’s historical underservice by domestic operators.

The airline doubled its international destinations to over 40 cities within recent years, with Airbus A321 XLR aircraft arriving in fiscal 2026 and widebody aircraft in 2027.

The airline targets 40% international available seat kilometers by 2030, leveraging India’s geographic advantages for expansion to Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

IndiGo (6E) expanded Singapore service from 3 to 9 Indian cities while opening new Central Asian routes to Baku, Almaty, Tbilisi, and Tashkent, with European services to Amsterdam and Manchester launched during the summer of 2025.

Aviation Growth Ambitions

Elbers expressed confidence in India’s infrastructure development supporting aviation expansion, citing planned second airports in Delhi and Mumbai, new terminals across multiple cities, and greenfield airport projects.

The CEO noted substantial investments in air traffic management systems alongside physical infrastructure improvements.

The airline CEO praised India’s young, intelligent, and highly skilled population as a competitive advantage, operating massive training facilities that prepare 2,000 people daily.

IndiGo (6E) maintains over 16% female pilots, double the industry average, while employing more than 250 people with disabilities across operations, demonstrating a commitment to workforce diversity and inclusion.
