The Georgia Parliament unanimously, with 80 votes, approved a package of legislative amendments concerning the ban on political parties.
The planned amendments to the laws "On the Political Associations of Citizens" and "On the Constitutional Court" were adopted on 13 May during the 3rd reading.
According to the project, the Constitutional Court will be able to prohibit the activities of a organization whose stated objectives, the essence of the activity and the individual composition duplicate the objectives, the essence of the activity and the individual composition of a organization already prohibited by the court.
Moreover, according to the draft originally submitted to Parliament, the final date for issuing a ruling on the conformity of the party's activities with the Constitution should not exceed 9 months from the date of the application and 14 days during the electoral period.
In the course of the examination of the draft, the word was amended, in accordance with the final version of the Act, both in the pre-election period and beyond, the Constitutional Court will decide within 14 days.
The Georgian Prime Minister, Mr Kobachidze, stated that the ban on the activities of certain political parties was a "democratic process" and that "when there are legal grounds for this, this should be done in a democratic state".
Kobachiga argues that certain political parties are banned in Ukraine and Moldova, and that the European Union welcomes this. In both cases, however, the parties active in Russia are concerned.
The EU Ambassador to Georgia, Paweł Herczyński, commented on the approval of the package of amendments by the Georgian Parliament. He stated that “this is not a European road”. The diplomat stressed that the European road is simply a dialogue, even if there are differences of opinion. Herczyński pointed out that the European Union is closely following developments in Georgia.
