The Parliament of Georgia adopted a peculiar message in consequence to the MEGOBARI Act, backed by the home of Representatives of the U.S. Congress.
The Parliament of Georgia evaluates the MEGOBARI Act, adopted by the U.S. home of Representatives, as an highly hostile act towards the Georgian state, the Georgian people and its authorities, including the Parliament of Georgia.
The paper mentions Deep Statestating that the "deep state" and its institutions have attempted to undermine democracy in Georgia.
According to the Georgia Parliament's assessment, the MEGOBARI Act is based on 3 false claims:
"Georgia experiences a crucial regression in the improvement of democracy;
– Georgia blocks Euro-Atlantic integration;
– Georgia connects with “Russia, China and another authoritarian regimes”.
In a statement, the parliament of Georgia hopes that the fresh US administration will effectively weaken the influence of Deep State, resulting in the US legislature regaining the erstwhile reputation it gained over 200 years of its activity. Georgian parliamentarians declare their willingness to cooperate with the U.S. legislature on all issues that can contribute to improving the relation between Tbilisi and Washington.
Previously, Georgia's Prime Minister, Iraq Kobachidze, published an open letter addressed to U.S. president Donald Trump and Vice president J.D. Vance. In this letter, he expresses, among another things, the hope of the Trump administration's "sincere fight" with the alleged Deep State and the reset of Georgian-American relations.
Kobachida, whose legitimacy is not recognized by erstwhile Georgian president Salome Zurabishvili, opposition and a large part of the population, reported that he sent Trump a letter on bilateral relations a fewer weeks ago.
"This letter preceded my public statements, in which I openly declared Georgia's readiness to re-establish strategical partnership with the United States and on the basis of a circumstantial 'road map'. However, we have not received an answer to this letter or to public declarations so far. Moreover, there has not been any high-level contact between the governments of Georgia and the US so far," Kobachida noted.
The Prime Minister stressed that silence "is a origin of amazement to the people and Georgian authorities" for respective reasons. He writes that "Georgia has for many years been the most faithful partner of the United States in an highly hard region of strategical importance to Washington."
Kobachidze besides writes that according to global rankings, Georgia "is leading the region in terms of democracy, the regulation of law, human rights, media freedom, the independency of courts, the efficiency of institutions and the level of corruption".
Kobachidze besides points to a similarity of the “values and ideological assumptions” of the Trump administration and the current Georgian government.
"The fresh U.S. legislature adopted an absurd alleged MEGOBARI Act against the Georgian government. Its name, in our opinion, is absurd — it resembles the Orwellian model: “war is peace, the enemy is simply a friend”. We have already been accustomed to adopting absurd acts by different parliaments recently, and that is why we would not have paid any attention to the MEGOBARI Act had it not been for a number of actors to attribute this act to your administration. This perception besides reinforces the deficiency of any critical message from the current administration in connection with MEGOBARI Act. All this undermines the assurance of the Georgian people not only in Congress, but unfortunately besides in the American administration, in which Georgian society had hopes," Kobachida said.
At the end of Kobachiga, he reiterates his hope for Trump's triumph against Deep State and for the launch of a "new strategical phase of cooperation with the United States".
In accordance with the proposal adopted by the home of Representatives for the MEGOBARI Act (Mobilising and Enhancing Georgia’s Options for Building Accountability, Resilience, and independency — Mobilising and expanding Georgia’s capabilities to strengthen accountability, resilience and independence), The United States will impose sanctions against those accused of:
– serious corruption,
– force and intimidation to block Euro-Atlantic integration,
– undermining Georgia's sovereignty, stableness and security.
The president of the United States is obliged, within 90 days of the entry into force of the document, to find the ellipse of liable persons and to apply sanctions to them.
