The right-wing populist alternate for Germany (AfD) has chosen organization co-chair Alice Weidel as its candidate for chancellor in the Bundestag elections on 23 February. The AfD, which is in second place in the polls, is fielding a politician for the first time in the race for prime minister. On the same day, the SPD's electoral convention in Berlin confirmed Olaf Scholz as chancellor by a near-unanimous vote.
