Rutte warns Putin: we will defend all inch of NATO territory

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte assessed Wednesday in Brussels that the Alliance and allies, "including of course Poland itself, but besides the Netherlands, Italy and Germany", reacted very effectively to the intrusion of Russian drones into Polish airspace.PAP

Mark Rutte estimated that NATO's reaction to Russian drones entering Poland was "very effective". He stressed that the Alliance would monitor the situation on the east flank, and NATO air defence remained on constant alert. The North Atlantic Council met in Brussels on Wednesday morning to discuss the situation after Poland requested consultations under Article 4 of the Washington Treaty. The allies unanimously expressed solidarity with Poland and condemned Russia's actions.

Warning to the Kremlin

Rutte assured that the associate States were determined to defend the full NATO territory. The Alliance will monitor the situation on the east flank and NATO air defence remains on constant alert.

The Secretary-General described the intrusion of drones into Poland as "absolutely dangerous", whether it was intentional or accidental. A full evaluation of this event is presently underway.

"We are able to defend all centimeter of NATO territory, including airspace" - stressed Rutte during a press conference in Brussels. He besides sent a direct message to the Russian authorities.

"To Putin my message is clear. halt the war in Ukraine. halt violating allied airspace. And know that we are ready, that we are vigilant and that we will defend all centimeter of NATO territory" - said Rutte.

First NATO Operation

On the night of Tuesday for Wednesday, the Polish Operations Command of Armed Forces Types reported a multiple breach of the Polish airspace by Russian drones. The essential safety procedures were launched in response.

Around 7:40 AM, DORSZ informed of the completion of the operation. Deputy Prime Minister and head of MON Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz reported that the threat drones were shot down.

According to NATO, for the first time the Alliance aircraft fought a possible threat in NATO airspace. Polish F-16 fighters, Dutch F-35 and Italian AWACS reconnaissance aircraft participated in the operation.
