Secretary of State Marco Rubio reported that president Donald Trump is likely to meet with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenski next week. The gathering is scheduled to take place in fresh York during a session of the UN General Assembly.
Rubio during his Tuesday visit to Israel said that the gathering would be held during a high-level general debate, which would start on 24 September and last until 30 September. This will be the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Continuation of truce attempts
The Secretary of State assured that Trump would proceed to search a truce between Ukraine and Russia. "He'll inactive try. If peace is possible, it wants to accomplish it" - said Rubio.
"At any point the president may conclude that this is impossible. He has not yet come to this, but he can come to this" - added the Secretary of State.
Threats of sanctions against Russia
Trump has repeatedly threatened to impose sanctions on Russia if Russian leader Vladimir Putin continues the war. However, he failed to carry out his threats despite further attacks by Moscow, as the agency recalled.
"If (Trump) had withdrew or imposed sanctions on Russia and said 'end', there would be no 1 in the planet who could mediate the end of the war" - Rubio explained.
History of relations with Ukraine
Taking office Trump suggested that he would end the war within 24 hours. He besides blamed erstwhile president Joe Biden for the Russian invasion and criticized the U.S.'s transportation of assistance to Ukraine.
In February, during a visit by the Ukrainian president to the White House, Trump and Vice president J.D. Vance publically reprimanded Zelenski, accusing him of being ungrateful. They briefly suspended military support and intelligence exchange with Kiev, which shocked US allies.
