Reuters: Romania – pro-European candidate wins presidential election

The pro-European mayor of Bucharest, Nicușor Dan, won the presidential election in Romania on Sunday. Dan obtained about 54% of the vote, while his competitor, right-wing AUR organization leader, George Simion, 46%.

Nicoșora Dana is the first partyless president of Romania. Although in 2015, Nicușor founded the Alliance for Rescue Bucharest party, which later became centre-right USR (Salvation UnionRomania ) in 2017 he left this group.

In the first circular of the presidential election, he gained 20% little than George Simion. 2 weeks later, in the second round, Nicușor won the race and defeated Simion by 7.2%.

One of the highest attendances in 25 years was recorded in the Sunday vote. 64.72 percent of Romanians voted, representing nearly 11.64 million votes, including over 1.6 million votes cast abroad.

In the neighbouring Republic of Moldova, over 157,000 people voted in the second circular of the presidential election, which is simply a evidence attendance in the country. Of the Moldovans, 88% chose Nicușor Dan and only 12% of George Simion.

Romania's European allies and markets welcomed Nicosor Dan's triumph on Sunday. The president of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen said that Romanian citizens chose "an open, prosperous Romania in a strong Europe".

Ukrainian president Volodimir Zelenski toocongratulated Dan on his "historic victory", writing on social media: "For Ukraine, as a neighbour and friend, it is crucial that Romania be a reliable partner".

For his part, French president Emmanuel Macron wrote on Platform X that he had called the president-elect of Romania.
