Deutsche Welle's editorial sent a request to the press office of the Holy See. Journalists wanted to know whether the Church authorities knew about the provocations and tortures that priests were subjected to, and whether they were talking to Minsk about their release.
The editorial received the following reply:
“The Holy See closely follows the situation of the Church in Belarus and expresses its spiritual closeness to the faithful and priests. At the moment, we have no additional comments."
According to human rights defenders, since 2020 more than 90 priests in Belarus have been subjected to repression. 3 priests were considered political prisoners.
