Similar Incidents

Qatar Airways experienced an emergency diversion on December 25, 2024, during its daily flight from Hamad International Airport, Doha to Paris. The Boeing 777-300ER, registered as A7-BEX, initiated its scheduled journey with takeoff from Doha at 12:39 PM UTC.

Approximately two hours into the flight, the crew declared an emergency due to an unspecified passenger medical issue. Following established aviation protocols, the flight immediately diverted to Erbil Airport, landing safely at 2:44 PM UTC.

The aircraft remained on the ground for over two hours, addressing the medical situation. At 5:12 PM UTC, the flight resumed its journey, ultimately landing in Paris at 9:33 PM UTC after a seven-hour extended flight path.

This incident mirrors a similar medical diversion that occurred in March 2024, when Qatar Airways flight QR806 made an unexpected landing at Kolkata Airport. The Airbus A350-1000, registered as A7-ANO, was en route from Doha to Tokyo Narita when crew members reported a medical emergency.

During the Kolkata incident, the four-year-old A350-1000 departed Doha International Airport at 11:45 PM UTC. After four hours of flight, the crew diverted to Kolkata Airport, landing at 4:15 AM UTC. The aircraft remained grounded for two hours before resuming its journey at 6:10 AM UTC and completing its route to Tokyo Narita at 11:42 AM UTC.

While medical diversions typically present operational challenges for airlines, they underscore the critical importance of passenger safety. In the Kolkata case, the emergency landing unexpectedly provided aviation enthusiasts with a rare opportunity to observe the advanced A350-1000 aircraft, transforming a medical necessity into a noteworthy aviation moment for the airport.
