Vladimir Putin offered Donald Trump a one-year extension of the key atomic treaty between Russia and the US. The Russian leader made an offer during the Monday gathering of the Russian Federation safety Council.
The strategical Weapons simplification Treaty, called fresh START, is simply a bilateral agreement of 2010 requiring both countries to reduce atomic arsenals. The paper consists of 16 articles and limits the number of atomic warheads deployed to 1550 units and their means of transportation to 800.
Conditions of the Russian proposal
"Russia is ready to proceed to respect the central numerical limits resulting from the fresh START Treaty, for a year after 5 February 2026," Putin said. The current treaty expires on 5 February 2026 after a five-year extension agreed in 2021.
However, the Russian leader stressed the terms of his offer. "We believe that this measurement will only be feasible if the United States takes akin measures and does not take steps which undermine or undermine the existing balance (in terms of) deterrence capacity" - Putin noted.
Objective of global non-proliferation
According to Reuters Putin, he justified his proposal "with the interest of the global non-proliferation of atomic weapons" and the desire to "invigorate dialog with Washington on the successor of this treaty". The fresh START replaced the earlier START I treaty in force between 1994 and 2009 between the US and Russia.
The fresh START Treaty entered into force in 2011 and is the only existing atomic arms control agreement between the world's largest atomic powers.
