California authorities say sending the National defender to Los Angeles was illegal, violating national law and undermining state sovereignty. lawyer General Rob Bonta assessed in an interview with CBS News that a national government decision deprives the state of resources needed to defend residents, especially in crisis situations. In his opinion, president Trump had no legal basis to send the defender to LA, as this is constitutionally permissible only in the event of invasions, rebellions or inability to enforce the law by national forces – and no of these conditions were met.
Governor Gavin Newsom announced a suit against the Trump administration and called for a withdrawal of the defender from Los Angeles County. He stressed that this action only exacerbated the situation and took place without his consent.
