The president vetoed the Silesian language bill

President of the Republic of Poland Andrzej Duda refused to sign the law granting the Silesian dialect the position of a separate language. The head of the state referred to the opinions of Polish linguists, who mostly reject the explanation that Silesian was an independent language.

In the opinion of the President, the criteria for establishing a peculiar regional language are not met due to the fact that Silesia is in no crucial way different from the remainder of the country, culture or tradition. Andrzej Duda besides added that the Silesian noises are the noises of the Polish language, and the Silesian dialect, which they consist of, is the same dialect of Polish language as the Malopolska, Wielkopolska and Mazowieckie dialect.

The president referred, in his justification, to the opinion of the linguists, first of all to the opinion of the Council of Polish Language, which spoke against the designation of the speech of the Silesians as a separate language, unanimously stating in the opinion:

To ask if the language utilized by the inhabitants of advanced Silesia is simply a dialect of Silesian Polishin accordance with Article 27 of the Constitution of the Republic of Poland, the authoritative language in the Republic of Poland, if not all, Almost all Polish linguists will answer yes. And the dialectologists will add that “the language traditionally utilized by the people of advanced Silesia” is part of the Silesian dialect Polish - We read.

Andrzej Duda pointed out that the Council of the Polish Language consisted of many specialists, and opinions expressed by it, are taken by means of resolutions, i.e. The Council’s position should be considered representative.
