The Paris court ruled on Monday a four-year prison sentence, including 2 suspended, for Marine Le Pen for fraud of public funds, as well as a five-year ban on moving for public office, enforced immediately.
Prime Minister Meloni said to the Italian newspaper: "I do not know the merits of the charges against Marine Le Pen nor the reasons for specified a serious decision, but I think that no 1 who has democracy in his heart can enjoy a conviction that hits the leader of a large organization and takes the representation of millions of citizens."
"A way to get free of opponents"
“Il Messaggero” besides quotes Minister Tommaso Foti’s comment on European affairs: “The ban on moving for 5 years is simply a way like any another to get free of political opponents. I have always felt that political opponents are defeated at ballot boxes and not yet excluded before their vote."
Co-chair of the European Conservatives and Reformists in the European Parliament Nicola Procaccini assessed that the conviction was "the next terrible failure of the regulation of law in a key EU country".
Immediately after the verdict of solidarity with Marine Le Pen was announced by Italian Deputy Prime Minister, leader of the right-wing Matteo Salvini League, who assessed that the decision of the Paris court was “the declaration of war by Brussels”.
