Over 300 million people worldwide require humanitarian support and protection. Armed conflicts, hunger and climate change are exacerbating the crisis – Newseria is alarming.
According to the United Nations of late May 2025, nearly 300 million people worldwide urgently request humanitarian aid and protection. The same number of people face serious food shortages all day. The causes of the deteriorating situation include expanding armed conflicts, natural disasters and the global economical crisis. On 19 August, the planet Humanitarian Day is being celebrated to remind us of the scale of the challenges facing the global community.
More and more people request support
– In 2025 the forecasts were not good. Nearly 300 million people request aid worldwide. Of course, there are hot spots, specified as Gaza and Sudan, but besides Ukraine. We do not forget Yemen, Southeast Asia. Fortunately, according to the data, the number of people in request has been reduced for half a year, but unfortunately not all of them will get help," he says. Helena Krajewska, spokeswoman of the Polish Humanitarian Action.
Over the last 5 years, the number of people in request of support has increased by more than 100 million. Although the situation has stabilised in any regions thanks to aid, the global crisis is inactive serious.
Record number of conflicts
– In 2025 we see the most conflicts since planet War II, whether global or internal. Sudan, Ukraine, Gaza Strip can be mentioned here. There was besides this conflict on the Iran-Israel line, which left behind many victims and people who lost their homes or livelihoods," he explains. Helena Krajewska.
A peculiarly dramatic situation persists in Syria, where, after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime, the country faced a reconstruction challenge. Destroyed infrastructure and ongoing fighting in the state of Suwawada prevent returning refugees from surviving a average life.
In Yemen, where the civilian war is already eleven years old, nearly two-thirds of the population needs support. The deficiency of clean water and appropriate sanitation causes an increased hazard of epidemics.
Ukraine, mediate East and Southeast Asia in the spotlight
– In Ukraine, the situation in different regions stabilises, but there is no safe point on the map of Ukraine. Most recently, Kiev is very heavy experienced by raids, which origin further humanitarian needs," emphasised the PAH expert. "In Southeast Asia, we have very dangerous effects of climate change. We see abrupt flooding, monsoons, mudslides. This besides deprives people of their home and of their ability to survive.
Climate change is increasingly affecting African countries, specified as Somalia, South Sudan or Madagascar, where drought forces residents to migrate in search of water and food. The humanitarian crises are besides exacerbating the effects of global poverty.
Polish Humanitarian Action brings help
The Polish Humanitarian Action conducts relief activities in many countries on 3 continents, including Syria, Palestine, Somalia and South Sudan.
– There are many outbreaks in the planet at this point or conflicts that may be a problem in the future. It seems that next year we will gotta pay peculiar attention to the Sub-Saharan Africa region, to Southeast Asia and, of course, to the Levant – points out Helena Krajewska.
According to the PAH study for 2024, the organization has helped over 1 million people in 10 countries. The support was received, among others, by 161,000 Ukrainians, 67 000 people in South Sudan, nearly 50,000 in Palestine and almost 12 000 in Syria. Projects were financed by institutions (49%), individual donors (31%) and business partners (17%).
– We have spent over PLN 100 million and we hope that 2025 will surpass this number. The Polish Humanitarian Action primarily needs resources, due to the fact that we respond to abrupt crises. We besides conduct activities in places that the planet has already forgotten – he adds Helena Krajewska.
Currently, the PAH squad has 351 employees from 18 countries, of which 225 are employed locally.
