A star, an angel or a baby? Who brings gifts on December 24? This is how the article by Catherine Migdoł-Rogóz in the Christmas edition begins Warsaw Catholic weekly Let's go.. After the introduction into the past of the gift, the biography of St Nicholas, the tradition of the Child, who reached Silesian houses from the Czech Republic, extended (2 pages of the article) descriptions of preparations for Christmas Eve and its course in Warmia, Mazury, Wielkopolska, advanced Silesia, the chapter of Grandpa Frost appears.

At the East Ends, presents are dropped off by Grandpa Frost. Originally, it was a figure from east Slavic folklore that was popularized as the secular equivalent of Santa Claus during the period of the russian Union. Grandpa Frost is giving presents to children on fresh Year's Eve.
Madam, what you wrote does not concern the Polish, Roman Catholic tradition. In his article devoted to customs that have existed for centuries in the homes of Poles surviving in various regions of the Republic, you do not pass on Polish traditions at the east Borders, but customs of the Russianized Ukrainians.
Modern Ukrainian celebration can be called eclectic. It's rather a tv oil commercial. In it the typical want of "Happy Christmas" is said ...The grandpa of Mróz and his granddaughter Snihurok – created by russian ideologists fabulous heroes to replace ideologically harmful Santa Claus and Christmas neutral fresh Year. But as with traditions sometimes – the old 1 did not necessarily leave, and the fresh 1 accepted any places, so present the thought of oil producers does not seem paradoxical to anyone. (Zanna Słoniowska, Lviv, January 2004).
In the article you mention to the Silesian historian and writer in relation to the Christmas tradition in Silesia. delight mention to Polish historians and writers writing about the east Borders, perceive to the sensational programs of the Lviv Wave on the Katowice Danuta Skalska radio, which has for many years presented the past and modernity of our compatriots from these lands, as well as the empathy of the people of Silesia who accepted the Poles expelled from east Borders, know their traditions, and present they send aid to those who remained in the pre-war Homeland. alternatively of reaching out to the stereotypes which have been duplicated since the Polish People's Republic of Poland, as best as possible corresponding to the contemporary Ukrainian narrative, delight scope out to 1 of thousands of relations of Poles from the east Borders. (Big Poland is besides the Kresy only Western).
From the memories of Maria Markowicz – Krąpiec: erstwhile asked how it was on Christmas Eve - aunts showed surprise - replied: - Christmas Eve is now, before the war waiting for Holy Evening. "I commend you with these holy feasts, that in the wellness of happiness we may see next year, from next year to next 100 years, until the Lord will mark us with life."
I remember these wishes from an early childhood. These words were always spoken with large seriousness and haughtiness before the start of the Christmas supper. It was spoken by my grandpa John, later my father Joseph, now after his death by my brother Joseph. Preparations for Christmas began as early as the Advent period, erstwhile decorations were made - flowers from the paper. The paintings on the walls were decorated, a bouquet of freshly prepared flowers was set in the home under the figure of Our Lady. Everyone in the household eagerly awaited the first star, after seeing which the Holy Evening - Christmas Eve began, sitting for a festive dinner. The signal that the supper began was that the head of the household brought grain and hay. The grain snap set the host in the corner of the hut, and the hay put on the table which was covered with a tablecloth. As we enter the cottage with straw and hay, the host made wishes to all the householders, "I commend you with these holy holidays, that in the wellness of happiness we may see next year, from next year to a 100 years, until the Lord God of life does not mark us, let Jesus Christ be praised." After refusing to pray, the full household sat down for supper, breaking the wafer.
As my father’s sisters say, presents were not practiced for Christmas, but parents gave their children something fresh in clothing all Christmas.
Christmas was always expected in an elevated temper and with joy. After the supper ended, the household sat on a “grandfather” and sang carols. Grandpa is simply a straw thrown on the level in the home where they were just sitting after the supper, and then the full household slept on it, due to the fact that as I mentioned above, the beds were kept in a holy state throughout the holidays. Adolf Głowacki recalls: “Everyone slept on his grandpa that night, and a somewhat dim lamp was lit up all night long. It was like a unchangeable and a Bethlehem star." At midnight, the full household went out of the home for a shepherdess, and a snowy white village creaking under the shoes of snow and starry sky added the charm of this lofty and unique atmosphere." (Kresowy Serwis Informacji, 2011)
The fresh Year in Poles in east Borders describes Witold Szolginia in 1 of the 7 books depicting the past of Polish Lviv:
New Year. The chapter on Christmas and Celebration Lion is appropriate for me to start, according to the layout of the calendar, from fresh Year. Well, and I have problem at once, due to the fact that this first vacation in the year always looked and inactive looks almost identical and has the same temper as a small earlier Christmas. Which holidays, again according to the layout of the calendar, I remember and remind rather extensively and in item at the end of this chapter. So, in order to avoid repeating myself in descriptions and reflections, I must now make a certain choice of the subject of this fresh Year's tale, presenting something in it that will not be in that last Christmas. Let the “something” be the Lviv carolers. They besides walked in the streets of Lviv and caroled in his homes on Christmas Eve and on both Christmas and on the January feast of the 3 Kings, but were especially active on fresh Year's Day. In their caroling at that time, they brought and offered to the lions the want of all success in the whole, just begun next year. (Witold Szolginia)
On the streets of cities and villages in the east Borderlands inhabited by Poles, on 1 January the Kolędnics wandered, not the grandpa Frost.
I ask the editor to correct the report, it is highly harmful for millions of Poles from the east Borders murdered in homes, prisons of Lviv, Grodna, Vilnius, Ponaras, Katyń, sent to russian camps to Siberia, to Kazakhstan, and after the war in Ubek execution rooms, as unbreakable soldiers, precisely due to the fact that they refused to accept the conversion in the life of the Polish nation of presence. Baby for the presence of Grandpa Mroz.
But let's go back to fresh Year's. To this day I inactive remember the sacramentally repeated all year, the chanted tunes and the words of the responsibilities of our native, Lychakov carolers. They performed in 3 versions, the first of which sounded
We came here to praise,
Lady Guspudar,
Dubi, dubi,
Powwowwow and Tugu of the Year Nuweg.
You'd be alive.
You're a gsupudin.
Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday to you,
And the pu of death, and the pu of death with angels in the sky!!!
The second version of specified a sung caroling was:
Mrs. Guspodar, Mrs. Guspudini
In this house, in this home -
She gives you, God, she gives you, God,
A 100 corks of potatoes, a 100 corks of wheat,
Pubs, health, puppies, health,
In this house, in this house!!!
It is an irrational fact in urban conditions that the "twelfth of cartofels, a 100 grains of wheat" most likely came to Lviv in the old days from the Lviv countryside or from remote, half-rural suburbs of Lviv. However, this was wished by the people of my advanced Lychakov 8 months before the outbreak of planet War II, in January 1939...(Witold Szolginia).
Oh, my God.
