– You spit, you are unattractive – said erstwhile Prime Minister Donald Tusk to TVP writer Michał Rachonia. The seemingly harmless words – ad personam arguments – became a fuel for the full opposition in the election campaign.
Two events – or, in fact, wording – stuck in my memory about this campaign. I think they may have had a large impact on the destiny of the run and the final outcome. Hence, I invitation you to discuss in comments and look for answers to the question: why did the PiS lose the election?
“You spit, you are unattractive”
Case number one. Do you remember Donald Tusk's celebrated press conference outside the TVP office in Warsaw? At 1 point, TVP writer Michał Rachon attended the speech of the PO chief. He began to ask questions loudly, which prevented the chief of the largest opposition organization from speaking. He asked Tusk, among others, about Vladimir Putin and Angela Merkel – issues raised in the documentary series "Reset".
Piotr Boris and Michał Kołodziejczak – PO activists – went to the increasing Michał Rachonia. The writer didn't halt asking questions anyway.
At 1 point Donald Tusk turned to Rachonia.
“You spit, you are unattractive,” said the erstwhile Prime Minister. He asked Rachonia to "not interrupt", said that the writer is "incultural and ill-bred".
Words are harmless and unusual. No 1 has always insulted journalists like this. That might have been good on the another side.

Scandal! This video should be seen by all of Poland. That venom, haughtiness and hatred. Tusk's answer to the journalist's questions: "Please leave, you are unattractive." pic.twitter.com/3HKeWoGK79

Another issue that affected the run was the proposition that journalists were wrongly accused of being drunk at work.
– I wasn't the only 1 who felt like you were drunk. You were attacking the MPs, even the SOP officers were incapable to halt you," said Donald Tusk. – The Lord should be ashamed of this behaviour, not to return to it – said the politician.
A public proposition put journalists in a fresh awkward situation. They had to go to the police to prove they were sober.
Tusk returned to the press case during his next meeting. "Today I had another experience with the officers of Pisa, highly aggressive types. And I gotta say that they do not even know, due to the fact that I laughed in the spirit: you aid a increasing group of people in Poland realize who you are, how you behave, who you serve, how much you serve," he said.
TVP journalists in this peculiar situation were treated like politicians. They had no way of defending themselves, due to the fact that in journalism standards, suggesting taking anything that might affect perceptions or behaviour simply does not fit. Were they expected to be politicians? Nope.
Sir @donaldtuskMichael Solarz, whom you publically insulted, was subjected to a breathalyst examination at the police station. Score 0.0. erstwhile will you apologize to our journalist?! pic.twitter.com/NEZl7txfsO
— MARCIN SZYPSZAK (@marcinszypszak) October 4, 2023Why did the PiS lose the election? By not responding to contempt and disgust
The mocking, the sad jokes, the mocking, the disgust, it will be the language of public debate. PiS cannot usage specified an ad personam argument due to the fact that it is simply a organization for mature voters. In the meantime, it is simply a very effective way to rise emotions – liking young people, where PiS has no electorate.
“As shortly as possible, we request to make changes in state companies and get free of all these alleged brothers-in-laws,” said Prof. Marek Belka in an interview with money.pl, referring to the priorities of the fresh government.
This ‘language’ will not stop. It'll get tougher. The Law and Justice doesn't have an idea, doesn't send signals about how to deal with attacks like this.
Do you agree? Or do you have your own – another – look?
